Supercodex 04 [2013, Ryoji Ikeda, 3:20]

Japanese sound artist Ryoji Ikeda returns to minimal experimental bastion raster-noton for ‘supercodex’, the latest in a series of mind-bending, ear-probing albums for the label. The twenty tracks on the album show Ikeda on top form, with a characteristic marriage of high-tech production and physical presence in the palette of glitches, beeps and machine belches that remain his sounds of choice. ‘Supercodex 19’ must be one of Ikeda’s most ostentatious slabs of sustained low-end to date, recalling Senking’s latest album on the same label, and proving that, whilst much of the interrogative quality of the music comes from its burrowing ultra-high frequencies, there’s much here for fans of moodier electronics to enjoy too.
